The Kickboard is the Atlas of the kitchen. They bear the weight of it all: cabinetry, benchtops and everything else. In addition, they give your feet a lot of space so you can get close to the action without leaning over the bench.

Let’s discuss why this is an important piece of any good kitchen cabinet and how we as kitchen experts can guide potential home redesigners.

What is a Kickboard?

In floor mounted base cabinets, good design dictates that we hide the base plinth to protect it from spillage. To do this, A Kickboard is installed at the front, across the recess at the bottom of the cabinet.

They do not take load and are fixed to load-bearing platforms. The material and finishing of the floor is important when designing kick plates. Hard and durable materials like floorboards are preferable to materials like vinyl.

Kitchen Kickboards are also called kick plates or kickers. Their purpose is to keep the kitchen cabinets off the floor and keep them safe. Helps with cleaning, as debris can’t get underneath the kitchen bench.

If we dont keep kickboards, kitchen can appear more spacious, even though it can also create a barren empty space.

What if I don’t want to install Kickboards?

Every home and kitchen is different. In case you don’t like the look or feel and decide against installing a kickboard, we use cabinet legs or toe pokes at the bottom of the cabinetry.

They can be plastic or metal and can be fixed or flexible in design. The kickboard in this case is made up of plastic and attached to the front-facing part of the installed legs.

How to choose Ideal Colour and Materials for kickboard?.

Commonly used materials in kickboards are stainless steel and brushed aluminium.

Length of kickboards is generally kept at 3.6m. If you want it to be lower, you can keep them at around 2.4m.

Height of kick plates is kept between 1 to 2m. They are also kept 50mm away from the front edge of the floor cabinet and 70 mm to the drawer.

For exposed edges, waterproofing is done with a moisture resistant board or other waterproofing agent.

Kickboards are made by hard pressing the kick plate onto a waterproof board, making them spill and flood proof.

Pros of Kickboards

Here are five key benefits of incorporating kickboards into your kitchen design:

  • Hygiene: Kickboards help enclose the area beneath your cabinetry, preventing dust and debris from accumulating, which promotes a more sanitary kitchen environment.
  •  Enhanced Ergonomics:  Kickboards provide a recessed space that allows you to stand closer to your countertops comfortably, improving posture and reducing strain on your back and legs.
  • Aesthetics: Kickboards give your cabinets a finished look and can serve as a design feature when made from contrasting materials, such as stainless steel or patterned trim.
  • Cost Efficiency: Investing in quality kickboards can prove cost-efficient in the long run due to their durability, resulting in fewer replacements and repairs over time.
  • Compatibility with Premium Cabinetry: When paired with high-quality cabinets, kickboards ensure a harmonious integration and overall durability of the kitchen setup.

These benefits highlight the practical and aesthetic advantages of incorporating kickboards into your kitchen design, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal.
